Pick a suitable location.
Make sure that when choosing a location for your garden bed you pick a spot where there will be enough sunlight for the plants you are growing. You should also make sure that you put the garden bed into place before filling it with soil. Even for the smaller patio garden bed with base, moving it after it has been filled can be difficult.
Make sure you have enough soil.
Here is a table that shows roughly how much soil / potting mix you will need for each size garden bed. The number of bags given in the table assumes 30L bags of soil. A lot of potting mix is sold in 25L bags so take that into account.
|Size||Capacity in Litres|
|1800 x 900 x 450mm||729L (20 - 24 bags of soil)|
|1200 x 900 x 300mm||324L (8 - 10 bags of soil)|
|1200 x 450 x 450mm||243L (6 - 8 bags of soil)|
|800 x 500 x 300mm||120L (3 - 4 bags of soil)|
|600 x 600 x 300mm||108L (3 - 4 bags of soil)|
|740 x 550 x 300mm (Hybrid Garden bed)||122L (3 - 4 bags of soil)|
Rocks, pebbles or gravel can make an excellent base.
You may want to put a layer of crushed rock or gravel at the bottom of your garden bed. This will assist with filtration and drainage. If you're putting the garden bed on a hard surface you can line it with builders plastic to help prevent leakage of water and soil. Alternatively you can purchase our Patio Garden Bed which comes with a base specifically designed for hard surfaces.
Protect your plants from the elements.
To help keep your plants healthy and protected we developed the Drop Over Greenhouse to fit over our 1200 x 900 x 300 garden beds. The drop over greenhouse is ideal for growing plants in the colder months. It can be easily disassembled and stored away when not in use.
